This is the short, in-app version. It is displayed on first run before any motion mission
can be selected, and is available at any time from Settings → About → Health & Safety.
Rouse is not a health or fitness product
Rouse is an alarm clock. It is not a medical device and gives no medical, health,
fitness, sleep or psychological advice. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or
prevent any condition. Step counts in Rouse exist only to unlock an alarm — they are not a
fitness measurement and should not be treated as one.
Talk to a doctor before starting physical activity
Some missions ask you to walk or shake your phone. That is physical activity, done right
after waking, when you may be unsteady or disoriented.
Consult a physician or qualified healthcare professional before starting any new
physical activity, especially if you:
- have a heart, lung or circulatory condition
- have low blood pressure or feel dizzy when standing up
- have a balance, mobility, joint or musculoskeletal problem
- have epilepsy or a seizure disorder
- are pregnant or recently gave birth
- are recovering from illness, surgery or injury
- take medication that affects alertness, balance or blood pressure
- have not exercised in a long time, or are unsure for any reason
Stop immediately if you feel unwell
Stop the mission and use the Emergency stop if you feel any of the following:
- pain of any kind
- chest pain, pressure or tightness
- dizziness, light-headedness or faintness
- shortness of breath
- nausea
- an irregular or racing heartbeat
- anything else that does not feel right
Seek medical help if symptoms are severe or do not pass. Nothing about an alarm is worth
an injury.
You never have to move
Non-physical missions are always available. Arithmetic, typing a phrase, and repeating
a memory pattern will get you out of any alarm without taking a single step. You can change
your mission type at any time in the alarm's settings.
Emergency stop is always available, on every alarm, for everyone. It dismisses the
alarm without completing the mission. It is never hidden, never delayed, and never behind a
payment. Use it whenever you need to.
Do not use Rouse while driving or operating machinery
Never complete a mission — or interact with the app at all — while:
- driving or riding in control of any vehicle
- cycling
- operating machinery or power tools
- in any situation where distraction could hurt you or someone else
Watch where you are going
Missions happen in the dark, moments after waking, in a home you may be moving through
half-asleep. Before you start walking:
- turn on a light
- watch for stairs, steps, pets, cables and furniture
- avoid balconies, water, hot surfaces and open windows
- wear something on your feet if the floor is slippery
Rouse is not a reliable alarm for safety-critical situations
Alarms can fail for reasons outside any app's control — the operating system, your phone's
battery-saver, a revoked permission, a dead battery. Set a second, independent alarm if
missing this one would be dangerous or seriously costly.
You use Rouse at your own risk
By using motion-based missions you confirm you are physically able to do light activity and
you accept the ordinary risks involved, including tripping and falling. To the extent
permitted by law, Joseph Hagan, publishing as Binary Data Technology, accepts no liability for injury arising
from your use of the app.
In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
